these things are making life grand...

1. STYLE: Sonya Rykiel

2. IMAGES: Adriana Petit

This phenomenal artist's 400 ASA photography is mesmerizing and fiery. Something about her work inspires me to feel passionate about things more important than front pleated woolen trousers and defend them with every part of my being...

3. THE CLASSICS: old jews telling jokes

I have a secret passion for bad jokes. Thanks to this gorgeous site, I have been able to get my fix twice a week...

4. GENIUS: Dr NakaMats.

Holding the world record for the most inventions of all time (over 3,000), 80 year old Dr Nakamats has blessed the world with the floppy disk, the cd, the dvd, the taxi meter, spring shoes, the karaoke machine, the annual World Genius Convention and much much more. He sleeps for no longer than 4 hours a night, eats one meal a day and gets all of his ideas 0.5sec before death, while submerged underwater. His current goal is to live to 144.

A documentary following a day in the life of this brilliant man, directed by Kaspar Astrup, is to be released later this year.

5. INSPIRATION: We Love You So.

There are no words for how excited both myself and the rest of the world are for Spike Jonze's impending masterpiece Where the Wild Things Are. To make the wait a little easier and giving me a reason to get out of bed before the film's release, Jonze and his collaboraters have put together a FANTASTIC blog highlighting some of the inspiration behind the film... inhale and savour.

6. FILM: Manhattan

My one and only guaranteed me that I was put on this earth with the sole purpose of watching Woody Allen's 1979 slice of perfection.

It is hysterically funny, set in the city of my dreams, Gordon Willis' black + white cinematography is breathtaking, and Diane Keaton is my muse of the week. I have stopped wearing a bra and booked in for a perm...

these things are making life grand...

1. STYLE: Renee Perle

A Romanian Jewish girl who moved to Paris, Perle became a muse to famous photographer Jacques Henri Lartigue after meeting him in 1929

Arms full of bangles, casual t-shirts, smokey eyes...she was decades ahead of her time. A true style icon.

2. IMAGES: David Maisel

Maisel’s spectacular large-scale aerial photographs show the physical impact on the land from mining, logging, water reclamation, and military testing. The world looks different from up here...

3. FILM: The Five Obstructions (2003)

Based entirely around the reconstruction of Jorgen Leth's incredible 1967 short masterpiece, The Perfect Human, this is one of the funniest documentaries i have ever seen. It is pretentious, obnoxious and full of cheek.

leth is a truly elegant man and von trier, a master...
(Many thanks to my one and only x)

4. ACTIVITY: Origami

When inundated with work, there is no better form of procrastination.

5. OBJECT: Clutch by Sofia Coppola for Louis Vuitton

I am not a big-name-brand lover, but something about this clutch speaks to me. In fact it yells, very very loudly.

6. GOOD COMPANY: Steven Spielberg, Andy Warhol + Bianca Jagger.

i have no words for how fantastic this scene is.
does Spielberg appear to be buzzing off more than just a dose of good conversation?

7. SOUND: boy bands.

these boys have been making life truly swell:

- department of eagles
- the walkmen
- royskopp
- black starr
- abe vigoda
- white rabbits
- cave singers
- the roots
- black keys
- french kicks
- phoenix

werner herzog is making life grand...

1. STYLE: Katherine Hepburn

There is no single being whose style I admire more.

2. IMAGES: Takashi Homma

Born in 1962 in Japan, this phenominal photographer has a truly amazing body of work. I wish I had a copy of Tokyo Suburbia for my very own.

3. GENIUS: Werner Herzog

My one and only and I, cannot say enough about this man, so I will try to keep it short. A writer, director, actor + philosopher, Herzog argues that one has not lived until they have been unsuccessfully shot at.

Check out his blog to discover the inner thoughts of a magnificent being. (Whether this site is legitimate or not, be sure to read it in your best werner herzog voice)

4. FILM: Mister Lonely

Harmony Korine makes the kind of films that make my one and only and I, excited about making films. This one is SPECTACULAR. Not to mention that Mr Herzog's performance is as funny and delicious as a piece of turkish delight.

5. FOOD: Sweet potato.

There are days where I truly wish that everything in the world was made out of sweet potato. Then I realise that there would be no 30Rock dvd's to watch before bed.

As the weather gets colder, eat this.

6. OBJECT: blackboards.

I love them. I have never been able to write on them neatly, but I'm told that I am driven by negative reinforcement.

This track puts me in a hypnotic trance that I never want to snap out of.

these things are making life grand...

1. Style: MARTY REISMAN

Table tennis champion and style icon. Reisman developed his table tennis skills as a hustler in New York in the 1940s.

Great tailoring, fantastic eyewear, panama hats and sensible shoes. Fashion wisdom of this magnitude cannot be taught.

2. Images: MELVIN SOKOLSKY'S 1963 "BUBBLE" SERIES

A legend of fashion photography, Sokolsky had no formal training in photography and began by using his father's box camera at the age of ten.

These images he took for Harper's Bazaar are genius. They are cheeky, satirical, magical and cinematic. Everything I look for in a human...

This truly changed the way I see film and began what will undoubtedly be a life long love affair with Spike Jonze. Along with everything else, the costumes are incredible.

4. Reading: ZADIE SMITH.

I know that I am a little slow on the uptake with this, but Miss Smith has truly swept me off my feet. Her style is both classic and fresh. On Beauty is intoxicating. I can't wait to delve into some of her short stories...

5. Perfection: NATALIE PORTMAN.

Yet another reason to love her. Dedicated to Ben, whose infatuation knows no bounds.
(via hi there)

6. Object: FANTASTIC MAN MAGAZINE.

I am not ashamed to say that I desperately want a subscription to this magazine. I too understand the simple, elegant, beauty of a bowler hat and am forever plagued by my fear of the handshake.

7. Sound: THE KILLS.
