SMITTEN WITH...#5

these things are making life grand...

1. Style: MARTY REISMAN

Table tennis champion and style icon. Reisman developed his table tennis skills as a hustler in New York in the 1940s.

Great tailoring, fantastic eyewear, panama hats and sensible shoes. Fashion wisdom of this magnitude cannot be taught.

2. Images: MELVIN SOKOLSKY'S 1963 "BUBBLE" SERIES

A legend of fashion photography, Sokolsky had no formal training in photography and began by using his father's box camera at the age of ten.

These images he took for Harper's Bazaar are genius. They are cheeky, satirical, magical and cinematic. Everything I look for in a human...

This truly changed the way I see film and began what will undoubtedly be a life long love affair with Spike Jonze. Along with everything else, the costumes are incredible.

4. Reading: ZADIE SMITH.

I know that I am a little slow on the uptake with this, but Miss Smith has truly swept me off my feet. Her style is both classic and fresh. On Beauty is intoxicating. I can't wait to delve into some of her short stories...

5. Perfection: NATALIE PORTMAN.

Yet another reason to love her. Dedicated to Ben, whose infatuation knows no bounds.
(via hi there)

6. Object: FANTASTIC MAN MAGAZINE.

I am not ashamed to say that I desperately want a subscription to this magazine. I too understand the simple, elegant, beauty of a bowler hat and am forever plagued by my fear of the handshake.

7. Sound: THE KILLS.

The bubbles were held in place with a wire rope (presumably attached to a crane or something) which was retouched out of the images. There are contact sheets floating around the internet that show the mystery wire.

How mesmerizing the images appear to us, and how spectacular they must have appeared in their day.

Truly a master at work.
